In Velvento, as in the whole of Macedonia, viticulture is a deep-rooted practice with a long tradition therefore, it is not surprising the peoples’ special love for the Voyatzi Estate’s labels…
How can we introduce visitors to Voyatzi Estate’s profile?
Voyatzi family comes from Velvento, a picturesque town in western Macedonia, located 33 km southeast of Kozani, on the foothills of Pieria Mountains, by the Lake Polyfytos.
At this site, in the place of the old vineyard of Voyatzi family, the third generation, Yannis Voyatzis, who has studied oenology at the University of Bordeaux,.France and has substantial experience in the Greek wine production, his brother, Nikos, who is an engineer, and their father, Harissis, created in the years 1991 – 1994 a new,.modern 100 acre vineyard aiming at the production of high-quality wines of a distinctive character. The winery is managed by the chemist – enologist Irene Zande, while the care of the vineyards is under the utmost attention and love of Nikos and Dimitris.
The vineyard is situated next to the lake at an altitude of 340 meters, providing the main powerful element in differentiating the expression of the estate’s wines. The mild local breeze of the lake aura that develops during the day,.softens the maximum temperatures and keeps the air humidity high. Within this area one can find sandy-loam, clay-loam and deep soils,.enriched in many parts with calcium carbonate which improves the structure of grapes and provides ideal conditions for producing wines of exceptional quality.
Assyrtiko, Chardonnay, Malvasia Aromatica, Xinomavro, Moschomavro and Tsapournakos form the main varietal body of the estate,.along with several other local grape varieties that are organically grown.

Which two labels should visitors take with them, as a reminder of their visit?
Certainly, the Lefkotsiknias and the Tsapournakos.
Lefkotsiknias is a migratory lake bird with impressive elegance and refinement, like the wine produced by the flagship Greek variety Assyrtiko, which has been perfectly adapted to the terrestrial climate of Velvento. It is a dry wine with strong aromas and characters which bring intense floral citrus, pineapple and hints of honey. Full-bodied, rich, with a well-balanced acidity and alcohol that ends up in a long aftertaste.
Tsapournakos is a rare and special variety found in the region of Velvento and belongs to the Cabernet Franc family. It is a dry red wine with particular aromas that combine floral and fruit hints such as red berry and citrus together with spices,.smoky, herbs and spicy characters, composing a complex bouquet. It’s taste is smooth with well-structured and balanced tannins, rich, with a long aromatic persistence. A very attractive wine, with essence and elegance, that captures the special character of the variety.
What are the highlights of the wider region that visitors should not miss?
